PEI weekend international summit on bullying

An international summit on bullying and online harassment was held in Charlottetown, PEI on Saturday.

Politicians and social media companies attended as well as Glen Canning and Leah Parsons, whose daughter, Rehtaeh, committed suicide earlier this year.

According to CBC, social media and technology companies were asked by students to do more to help prevent cyber bullying.

Google and Facebook responded saying they’re working on online tools to report events of bullying to parents.

But a psychology graduate student, Jeremy Doucette says it’s also important not to label bullies as villains.

Montreal Police unveil new armoured vehicle

The Montreal Police force has unveiled its latest innovation, which carried a price tag of $360 000 and has been in the making for the last 11 years.

The Montreal Gazette reported on Thursday that the SWAT team arm of the SPVM showed off a new armoured vehicle at a press conference on Wednesday

Francois Houle, the commander of the Montreal force’s SWAT team that the vehicle would be used in tense situations to protect officers and citizens within a perimeter when a person is using firearms.

Secular charter creates division and abolishes rights: Opposition

The Quebec Government has tabled its secular charter, and with it provoked another wave of debate, this time from multiple levels of government. 

According to CBC, heated debate began between Premier Pauline Marois and Liberal Opposition leader Jean-Marc Fournier in the national assembly once the bill was tabled.

Fournier says the PQ government is creating an unfounded division in Quebec society, and that the neutrality of the province is not in peril.

Marois responded by asking if Fournier lived on the same planet, saying the bill was founded on the values of democracy, equality, and neutrality.

FDA's Proposed Ban on Trans Fats Could Benefit Canadians

Rob Ford Admits Cocaine Use

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has admitted to using cocaine.

According to The Toronto Star, Ford has apologised, saying he is not an addict.

This comes after months of Ford denying drug use.

The scandal came to light last spring when a video of him smoking crack was reported on by The Star.

The police are now in possession of the video.

Ford says he plans to continue in office.

Gay Marriage to Become Legal in Illnois

Gay marriage is set to become legal in Illinois.

According to the Washington Post, Governor Pat Quinn says he will sign the bill into law by the end of the month.

President of the National Organization for Marriage, Brinn Brown, opposes the bill.

He says it will mean harassment for those who hold traditional marriage views. 

Illinois is the 15th American state to pass same-sex marriage laws.

The move has already been endoresed by the U.S. President Barack Obama.

Fracking Plans Paused Near Gros Morne

An application for fracking near Gros Morne National Park has been put on hold by 

the Newfoundland and Labrador government Monday. 

 

CBC reports the Shoal Point Energy and it’s partner Black Spruce Exploration’s plan 

to use hydraulic fracturing to extract gas and oil reserves from the shale rock on the 

western region of the province has been paused, for now. 

 

The government has stated that they will not look at the application until they are 

satisfied that the process will not harm residents or the environment. 

 

UNESCO has mentioned that environmental status of Gros Morne National Park 

could be at risk.
