MUTEK 13th Edition

MUTEK

The 13th edition of MUTEK has come and gone, and all that's left of it are the memories (or at least, most of the memories... probably). As usual, MUTEK delivered stellar performances over the entirety of its five-day span, and since no one wants to read a review that runs on for pages and pages, I'm going to limit myself to the most memorable events I was fortunate enough to see.

The Commencement Speech Concordia Students Deserve

I haven't come by to post in ages and this isn't news but it is useful and inspiring advice for all, especially to soon to be Concordia graduates. Enjoy the very talented and prolific Neil Gaiman's commencement speech. Good luck to all!

Film Review - Hunger Games

Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit, Big) directs Suzanne Collins’ adaptation of The Hunger GamesThere is a lot of buzz around this film and when I exited the theater, I knew why it's making audiences excited about cinema again. Ross made my adrenaline rush and my eyes widen with intense concern for his characters’ survival.

This Weekend - Keller Williams, The Unsettlers, and more!

-The Unsettlers

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, there are two really big shows at Cafe Campus. Tonight, Keller Williams brings his amazing guitar skills and humour to the stage at Petit Campus, blending bluegrass, folk and reggae into writing songs about being a contestant on The Price is Right and a certain combustible in his pocket; a good time should be had by all.

View from the Venue - Solids

On this episode of View From the Venue, I sat down for a chat at Bar L'Absynth with Montreal's own alternative rock act Solids, whose live show just so happens to live up to their name. These days they're tearing it up on the east coast on a short tour in Newfoundland. The duo talk playing in basements, cross-format music releases and the benefits of being a two man band. Check out their EP, Generic Dogs.

Behind the Scenes: Funding Drive

The purpose of any funding drive is to raise funds, but I went into organizing this year’s event focused on making strong ties to the community first. Starting something that hasn’t been done before means creating a strong foundation for future years. Whether it was finding major sponsors for the drive or local businesses to partner up with for the Friends Card program, there was pavement to pound.

Film Review - Goon

Hockey fans rejoice! A modern day Canadian hockey tale has come to cinemas and it will get your blood pumping and make you wonder if there is a hockey game playing tonight. I had the pleasure of attending the premiere in Montreal and got a chance to talk to the stars about their very Canadian oriented project. Director Michael Dowse was quite excited about premiering the film at the Amc Forum; it was a perfect fit for the night’s hockey theme.

Robert Glasper @ Theatre du Gesu on February 24th

The Montréal en Lumière Festival kicked off on February 16th and continues till the 26th with an extensive list of amazing events and shows that really lighten up this city and clear up our grey winter skies.

Phife Dawg @ Club Soda on February 19th

Montreal get ready! February 19th is "Baby Phife’s Return."
