Concert Reviews

Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings + Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears @ Metropolis

Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings is kicking off a new tour and her first stop is Montreal at Metropolis. This meant the crowd had the pleasure of getting her fresh and excited.

Deftones @ Metropolis

The American ‘metal’ band Deftones reigned over a full house on May 4th. Metropolis was at full capacity; people could barely walk to the bar without bumping into someone. Personally, I had never seen the venue so crowded. Fans flocked from all over the country just to see these guys perform live. “I bought my ticket off some dude from Vermont,” exclaimed one fan that had searched craigslist for a ticket after he found out that the show was already sold out.

Reverend Horton Heat @ Le National

Dallas, Texas-based psychobilly trio The Reverend Horton Heat were recently back in Montreal and back in my jukebox! With 9 albums and 25 years of greasy, grimy, guitar lickin', bad-ass upright bass whippin', and dirty drum kickin' music under their belt, The Reverend Horton Heat kept the crowd rockin'.

Easy Star All-Stars @ Cabaret Mile End

Midway through their opening song, vocalist Menny More of the reggae collective Easy Star All-Stars, interrupted the music: “Don’t be shy. Bring yourselves closer, so we can party rightly.” There was no hesitation at all; the no man’s land between the stage and crowd was instantly filled with revellers itching to groove to the sweet bass work of Ras I Ray.

Christine Fellows @ Divan Orange

Upon arriving at the entrance to Divan Orange for the Christine Fellows show, I was amazed to see no one outside smoking. What did this mean? Did it mean the show was so great that it prevented those that love to fill their lungs with smoke and nicotine from indulging? That’s it; it had to be because it was a mesmerizing show.

Naturally 7 @ Corona Theatre

Heard of a cappella vocal music? All the vocal nerds that just chirruped kindly ignore this bit. To the rest, allow me to educate you. “A cappella” means vocal music without instruments. While originally a classical term, it's commonly found in styles like doo wop, barbershop and, more recently, pop covers ('Glee' and 'The Sing-Off' both feature a cappella music).

Classified + Kidz In The Hall @ Club Soda

So, on a beautiful Saturday, there I was at another great concert (one of many that weekend in Montreal). The first act had just finished playing to an almost full Club Soda when I got there. For it to be full at that point - before the main act - was great to see. Whatever the reason, we were all there to see Juno-nominated rap-producer Classified.
