Chrétien pushes for a federal party

Jean Chrétien Doctorat honorifique UQTRAccording to the Globe and Mail, the idea to merge the Liberal and New Democratic party into one federal party is still being promoted by Jean Chrétien. However, the NDP are still strongly against approaches towards Quebec’s independence.

Former Liberal prime minister does not believe that NDP would take over the now-reduced Liberal party. Instead, the shape of the new political entity would be based on the strength in their ideas as apposed to which party holds the most seats.

Chrétien strongly believes that the Liberal party could hold their place with any negotiations.

Chrétien noted the fact that Canada has had three minority governments since 2004 and believes that this merger party would bring about political stability.
